Winning is not everything

While practicing with your teammates, it is important to remember that winning your bouts is not everything. The best practice includes fencing people who often beat and challenge you which provides you opportunities to grow. Be sure to analyze your opponent and try to work on actions you are uncomfortable with to further develop your fencing.Your primary focus should not be to win the bout (unless your coach says otherwise), it should be to grow and learn so that you can win while competing at a tournament. This also means that sportsmanship is a core value of our sport and it is essential that you treat your teammates with respect, not only do they deserve your respect but they may not want to fence with you again if you are disrespectful to them.

Watch video review

Video review is an important part of competitive fencing. While often it may seem boring and unnecessary and no one likes to see themselves lose. If your tournament allows it, film your bouts at tournaments and review them. This will allow you to see your errors and mistakes that you can work on correcting in practice. It is important to practice intentionally and continuously if your goal is to grow as an athlete.

Don’t be afraid to try new things

In practice, it is important to try new things that allow you to grow. This may be new equipment such as our 15/14 shoe, a different distance, grip, or action, or timing. No matter what you are trying, do not be afraid of what other people think of you or your fencing. Trying new things is an essential part of growth, no matter your fencing level. The sport of fencing is always growing and developing and it is important that you are growing and developing along with it. This is also a great way to get yourself out of a period where you feel like you are not growing athletically or you are not making consistent progress.

Stay focused

While you may have lots of friends at practice and it is healthy to spend time with them and chat, your primary responsibility is to fence and work on drills or practice your footwork while at the fencing club. It is important to find a balance between developing personal relationships along with your fencing skills. One should not come at the expense of the other.

Always Challenge Yourself

Even if you are fencing someone who may be weaker than you or less experienced, there are many ways that you can continue to challenge yourself. For example, you may work on only trying to score a touch using one specific action or timing. You can also narrow your target area and only allow yourself to score touches to a specific area of your opponent's body to work on your point control.
